There was once a wise man old man who lived in a small village. All the people greatly respected this man. Whenever they had a problem they would go to him and ask for guidance. In the course of their talks the old man promised the people he would show them the way to happiness. He asked them to send him a representative, one whom they thought was the happiest person in the village. After they gathered together for discussion, they concluded that the most beautiful person would certainly be the happiest. So they unanimously chose a beautiful young lady and sent her as their rep. Upon seeing the beautiful woman, the old man turned his back. He uttered not a word, his silence was a distinct denial. The people gathered again, this time deciding that the richest person had to be the happiest. So they chose the wealthiest man among them, sending him as their rep. Seeing their second selection, the wise man became utterly discouraged. He started walking towards a field, and several followed him. Suddenly he stopped. Beside him was a youngster crying, holding a dying sparrow in his hands. Why are you crying? Asked the old wise man. Between the tears the young boy replied; "I was walking through this field. As I was going I saw this sparrow. It was hurt so bad and I tried all I know to do to keep it alive, but still it is dying." An understanding smile spread all over the old man's face. Turning to those following him, the wise man explained; "this is the way to true happiness: to have love and compassion for others." True happiness establishes a purpose with permanence, identity and power.
