Let's look at the Stages of Spiritual Decline:
2. Stage two is presumption. Peter presumed some things that led to his denial. "Then he returned to His disciples and found them sleeping. 'Simon' He said to Peter, 'are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.' The spirit is willing, but the body is weak (Mark 14:37-38)." Why did he just pick on Simon? Because Simon wasn't worried about this, he felt he could take a nap. He presumed that he was strong enough and so capable in the things of God that he could sleep. "Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the hight priest, cutting off his ear (Mark14:47)." Who did this? John Mark tells us, "Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire (Mark 14:24)." This was Simon Peter who presumed he was strong enough to stand with Jesus and go to sleep without praying. Peter was very presumptuous. He thought he was spiritually strong, but because he didn't pray, he was hateful and hurtful. Jesus had just told him that he would deny him three times.
