Let's look at the Man:
1. "Here a great number of disabled people used to lie - the BLIND, the LAME, the PARALYZED. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty - eight years (John 5:3-5)." *The Blind - Sin blinds you to make you believe it feels good.
*The Lame - Those who are crippled. Many people are crippled in life and in church.
*The Paralyzed - Personal failure does this to many people in life.
The man is powerless. "Here a great number of disabled people used to lie - the blind, the lame, the paralyzed (John 5:3)." The man is helpless. "Sir", the invalid replied, ""I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me (John 5:7)." The man is hopeless. "One who was there had been an invalid for thirty - eight years (John 5:5)." He had been there 38 years, don't you think he is ready to give up? Bethesda means pool of mercy, but for him it was a pool of misery. "Hope deferred makes the heart sick (Prov.13:12)."
